Mara dressed in a full, silky skirt in varied hues of blue and green. It shimmered when she moved with the colors of sunlight swimming through ocean depths. She paired it with a flowing white blouse, and added a belt of small silver scallop shells, clasped one to another, around her hips. A silver chain hung around her neck, on which three small pearls were strung. Her long black hair flowed in loose waves around her shoulders, and on her feet she wore strappy, deep blue heels.

Jonathan had brought clothes to change into and now wore a dark blue, almost black, blazer, dark slacks and belt, and a button down dress-shirt in royal blue which was open at the collar. Mara smiled at him when she stepped out of the bedroom. He stared for a moment when he saw her.

She dropped her eyes. “I know it’s a bit different from my usual sweatshirt and ball cap,” she said.

Jonathan cleared his throat. “I’ll say.”

“It’s just that I don’t usually feel safe enough to wear things that draw more attention. You saw something of what happens at Ian’s reading.” She walked over to him and taking his arm, she looked up at him, “But tonight, with you, I’ll be just fine.” She leaned in and smelled the crook of his neck. “Mmm, you smell good.”

“Oh, that’s your lavender body splash. I saw it sitting on the counter in the bathroom and decided to give it a try.”

She smirked and dug a finger into his ribs, “That is not my lavender body splash.”

“Okay, okay,” he said laughing and wincing away from her fingers, “I brought my aftershave with me.” He took her face gently into both of his hands and gave her an intoxicating kiss. Slowly, he pulled away. “Are you hungry?” he asked.

All she could do after that kiss was gaze into his eyes. She suddenly felt hungry for many things, none of them necessarily dinner. She nodded slowly and she felt the palms of his hands, still holding her face, flush warm against her skin. He leaned in and gave her another kiss, slow and sensual. With a seeming reluctance he finally brought his lips to her ear. “I think we’d better go,” he said softly, “or we’ll never make it to dinner.”

There was a good crowd at the restaurant for a Monday, but they were able to get small table right away. They started their meal off with mussles, which lead to steamers, which progressed to lobster, and they ended by sipping dessert coffees and laughing softly over a low, intimate conversation.

Mara felt as though her happiness with Jonathan shone around her with a clear message that no one need apply for his position. She was only approached a couple of times during the evening, once when Jonathan was away from the table at the restaurant for a few minutes, and once at a cozy little place they went to afterward to hear live music. Jonathan left her briefly to get drinks from the bar and came back having almost to wade through a glut of men to get to her.
